One of my favorite books I have ever read is called Where the Mountain Meets the Moon. Where the Mountain Meets the Moon is a fictional book inspired by Chinese folklore written by Grace Lin. It is about a girl named Minli who lives in the village of Fruitless Mountain, a poor town with barely any water and food, and an even poorer family. Minli lives with her strict mother, who barely ever smiles, and her father who loves telling her stories. Minli eventually goes on an adventure to find the Man of the Moon, someone from one of his stories, to save her unhappy town and family. Minli meets friends along the way, and experiences new things and works through obstacles.
One thing I really like about this book is the different parts of the journey she goes on, and how descriptive the little details and stories are. There are so many obstacles Minli has to work through, and is constantly working hard to complete her quest. I also really like this story because the town Minli lives in is so lifeless and boring, but she always is ambitious and hopeful to help her poor town. I also like how Minli makes mistakes, and learns from them and is able to receive help from the friends she makes along her journey. She stays resilient and optimist most of the time, despite the challenges along the way, and the reason she is trying to find the Man of the Moon is to find answers so that her village can flourish and so her stubborn mom can finally smile again, and her parents won’t have to do such tiresome and grueling work everyday just to feed their family.
There are so many interesting details in this story, like ancient stories of magical creatures like dragons, and what they did for and against the Village of Fruitless Mountain. There is a story of the dragons who helped this village maintain prosperity and happiness, before The Village of Fruitless Mountain got its name. Another cool detail is when Minli uses the only money she has, which is the only money her family has, to buy something that was promised to give her luck and good fortune. When her whole town thought she was insane and stupid for spending money on this, they were proved wrong and she was led to the beginning of her journey.
Another reason I love this book is because of how unexpected and creative it is, and how it describes the story so vividly you can picture it in your mind. I like the magical creatures and the way they are described, and the details about all the magic and stories. I also like how although it is a fictional book about adventures and magic, it is not a story you hear everyday, and is different from all the books I have ever read. I always recommend this book to everyone I know, and to people of any age who love fictional stories and adventure.
