Many of the adults and students at the Lagunitas Community School have used the makerspace at the lower campus near the art room. After many years of the students at our school using this makerspace, kids and adults have expressed that they want a bigger makerspace with access to new tools. Since the community center is nonprofit, they were able to raise money to make renovations to an old building and turn it into a new and improved maker space.
On Thursday, the 23rd of October we spoke to Alexa Davidson, the Executive Director at the San Geronimo Community Center. We asked her what will be happening with the new makerspace, and the different resources it will have. She said that the new maker space will be a more complex space for people to let their creativity flow. The new makerspace is located where the old library used to be, and the old makerspace will now be an extra room for storage. Alexa said that “we will have much more space and more intricate tools including a laser wood cutter and a 3D printer.” Only half of this new maker space will be used for creating new projects, and the other half will be a shop where tools are available for anyone in the community to be able to do more hands-on learning experiences.
