In 1964, a woman named Teressa Bellissimo created a staple appetizer in Buffalo, New York: the iconic buffalo wings. She had no intent in making this little grub so huge; she was only doing it for her son and his friends as a late-night snack. The original buffalo wings only consisted of leftover chicken wings and Franks Red Hot with blue cheese from her family-owned bar, the Anchor. Now, buffalo wings have become one of the most popular foods in America.
Ghiringhelli’s Pizzeria: Founded in 1985, it still claims to be “Marin’s best pizza.” This pizza place is one of the most well-known restaurants in Marin. However, we are not talking about this delicious pizza, we are talking about the great hot wings they serve.
Redboys pizzeria: Redboys was founded in San Francisco in 1969 by Peter and Kitty Forstner. The restaurant was named after a drawing Peter made in his childhood years back in Germany. The fresh tomato and red wine marinara sauce is a magnificent combo with the sourdough crust. However, the wings are the star of this show with the crispy wings and the tender chicken.
Ghirenghelli’s buffalo wings are a great appetizer with portion sizes of 5 pieces for $9.75, 10 pieces for $18.95, and 20 pieces for $31.95 This means it is $1.75 per wing with a free side of delicious buttermilk ranch.
Red Boys buffalo wings prices are $9.00 for 6, and $16.30 for 12, which means it is $1.50 per wing. It may be cheaper but these wings are not as big as Ghirengehllis. They are less meaty and have less filling. To add on, Ghirengehllis gives the option for 20 wings which is better if you are throwing a party or eating with your family, whereas Red Boys does not.
Taste
Ghiringhelli’s wings are tossed with buffalo sauce in a wok and served with their famous ranch dressing. The wings have a distinct zesty flavor and a mild spice level. The ranch is peppery and tangy but also creamy at the same time. The wings and the ranch work perfectly together because of their unique flavors. The one con I have about Ghiringhelli’s is that it can be too tender to the point where the texture can taste raw and the bone will just crumble apart. But overall, it is one of the best wings around.
Redboy has juicy tender wings with a high spice level and a nice ranch dip to counteract that spice. The Redboys ranch compared to Ghiringhellis is not even close. It is very basic and not seasoned well. I have a feeling it is not restaurant-made.
Overall
Overall, Ghiringhelli’s has better quality, faster service, and better dipping sauce, but it is most definitely on the pricey side, unlike Redboys, which has bigger portions for cheaper but it has a long wait time and slower service. Our final ratings give Ghiringhelli’s Pizza’s wings a 7/10 and Red Boy Pizza wings a 5.5/10.
