There hasn’t been a Fall Festival at the middle school, but Jenelle Ferhart, our new principal, decided to do one this year. On Wednesday, October 16 there was an event in the Community Center courtyard with food, music, and middle school student talks. During the event, there was cooking by Danilo Canela and Camilo Koenig who made two different Mexican dishes. They made Tres leches, a cake soaked in condensed milk and topped with whipped cream. Canela and Koenig also made Aguas Frescas, a drink with crushed watermelon and sugar. The food was a fundraiser for the 2024 8th grade Civil Rights Trip. The 8th-grade class was also selling collard green starts grown in the garden. These small fundraisers are crucial in the fundraising for going to Alabama because they need to raise enough money for kids and chaperones in the 8th grade to go to Alabama. The other thing happening at the festival was a potluck, with all different kinds of foods and snacks. This was great for people because you could bring a dish and then get a whole dinner, for free! While making all the Tres leches and Aguas Frescas, Danilo Canela also made a playlist based on Mexican music to add to the atmosphere. There were many 6th and 7th-grade speakers talking about various things like the new school food and different things going on in the world. Two 8th graders, Jade Lomax and Junko Winningham, talked about the Civil Rights trip and its importance to the class. Everyone stayed and talked to each other after the speakers. October is part of Hispanic Heritage Month and the community celebrated it with the food and music by Danilo Canela and Camilo Koenig.
